Snow shovelling prices: what is fair?

Shovelling is priced by how much needs clearing and how heavy the snow is. Here is how to work out a fair price for a driveway, steps and walkway, whether you are hiring or being hired.

What changes the price

The size of the driveway and the depth and weight of the snow decide most of it. Wet, heavy snow takes far longer than a light dusting. Steps, a long path to the door and a corner of sidewalk add time.

Say what needs clearing, and whether you want salt or sand on the ice, when you send the request.

Flat price or by the hour

A flat price per visit is easy to agree for a regular driveway. For a big storm it is fair to adjust, so talk to the person before the day. On Flyer each young person's price is on their flyer before you send a request, and you can message them about a bigger-than-usual job.

If you are the one shovelling

Price for your time and for the hard work of heavy snow, and decide in advance what you will charge for a very big storm. Jobs have to finish by 9 pm and start no earlier than 6 am, so morning before school and after-school slots are the ones people ask for.

You set your own price on Flyer and keep it in full. The service fee is paid on top by the person hiring.

How booking works

  1. Find a flyer. Browse young people by job, price and availability, and read their reviews.
  2. Send a request. Pick a day and time. A card is needed, but nothing is taken until they accept.
  3. They accept or decline. Nothing is confirmed until they accept. Your card is charged then, and your street address is shared.
  4. Approve the finished job. They tap On my way and Start, then finish the job. You approve it and the money is released to them. Tipping is optional.

How Flyer keeps jobs safe

Flyer does not run criminal record checks, and it does not guarantee any job. Use the same judgement you would use hiring any neighbour’s kid. Read the safety rules in full.

Questions

How much should I pay a teenager to shovel my driveway?

It depends on the driveway and the snow. Each young person on Flyer sets their own price, so you can compare before you send a request, and message them if the job is bigger than usual.

Can I book shovelling for every storm?

You send a request for each day you need. Booking early, the evening before a forecast storm, works best.

Is it safe for a teen to shovel?

Heavy snow is hard work, so jobs are limited by age and every job ends by 9 pm. Overnight, ladder and roof work are not allowed on Flyer.

When do I pay?

Sending a request costs nothing. Your card is charged only if they accept. Flyer holds the money until you approve the finished job.
