Leaf raking prices: what is fair?

Raking leaves is priced by the job or by the hour, and the right number depends on the size of the yard, how thick the leaves are and whether they need bagging. Here is how to work it out, whether you are hiring or being hired.

What changes the price

Yard size matters most, then how many trees drop leaves on it. A small front lawn under one tree is a different job from a corner lot with mature maples.

Bagging, carrying to the curb or compost, and hauling to a collection point add time. Say what you want done before you agree a price, so both sides are talking about the same job.

Hourly or by the job

A flat price per job suits a yard with a clear start and finish. An hourly rate suits a big or unpredictable yard. On Flyer each young person chooses which to use, and the price is on their flyer before you send a request.

If you are not sure how long it will take, ask for a short first visit and agree on the next one afterwards.

If you are the one raking

Time yourself on the first yard. Add the time to bag and tidy up, and set a price you would be happy to do the same job again for. Mention your tools: a good rake, a tarp and bags make you faster, which is worth saying on your flyer.

On Flyer you set your own price and your own hours, and you keep the full price on your flyer. The service fee is paid on top by the person hiring.

How booking works

  1. Find a flyer. Browse young people by job, price and availability, and read their reviews.
  2. Send a request. Pick a day and time. A card is needed, but nothing is taken until they accept.
  3. They accept or decline. Nothing is confirmed until they accept. Your card is charged then, and your street address is shared.
  4. Approve the finished job. They tap On my way and Start, then finish the job. You approve it and the money is released to them. Tipping is optional.

How Flyer keeps jobs safe

Flyer does not run criminal record checks, and it does not guarantee any job. Use the same judgement you would use hiring any neighbour’s kid. Read the safety rules in full.

Questions

How do I know what to charge for raking leaves?

Time how long a typical yard takes you, think about whether bagging is included, and price it so the job is worth your time. Looking at what other flyers near you ask is a good check.

Should leaf bags be included?

Agree this before you book. Some people supply the bags and some expect the helper to bring them. Writing it in a message avoids a surprise.

Can a 13 year old rake leaves?

Yes. Teens aged 13 and up can put up a flyer on Flyer. Work hours are limited by age, and every job has to finish by 9 pm.

How is payment handled?

Sending a request costs nothing, and the hirer's card is charged only if the young person accepts. Flyer holds the money until the hirer approves the finished job.
